RagTime

Originally uploaded by John Setzler.

My newspaper adventures this morning took me to a new coffee house downtown called “Tee & Coffee Company.” I had never been here and it’s only been open for a relatively short time, but I had to meet some people for interviews and photos with one of the staff reporters. I arrived early. The reporter and interviewees (is that even a word?) arrived late. I ordered a cappuccino (french vanilla) with a blueberry muffin and sat at a table. Whenever I took a notion to look around, I saw this old upright piano in the corner staring at me. The ‘face’ of the piano had been removed so the inner-workings could be viewed. The rest of this antique had been painted blue and had art of various sorts drawn all over it. It was a bit sad. The old lady had been dressed up in punk rocker clothing and stood in a corner for the local twenty-somethings could gawk while they sip four-dollar coffees and discuss the evil Republicans in Washington. I felt sorry for her.

I opened up my camera bag and decided to give her immortality. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my tripod. I never carry that on newspaper assignments. I got out the 50mm lens and started looking at compositions through the viewfinder. I made about 15 different photos, including THIS ONE of her complete physique…

B&W works great with this subject. It’s nice that you whowed the whole piano in the linked shot, as well. I tune/repair/rebuild pianos and see a lot of “custom paint jobs”, but, that’s pretty wild. :)
