9/29/2007 - Henry Detter

Henry Detter of Maiden tends the grinding wheel in the old Murray’s Mill while corn is being ground into cornmeal and flour at the 23rd annual Murray’s Mill Harvest Folk Festival…

Today was the first of a two-day event called the Murray’s Mill Harvest Folk Festival that’s held annually at the Historic Murray’s Mill in Catawba, North Carolina.  This is the 23rd year of this event, and it’s about my 5th year of attendance.  Some of the attractions at this festival include a tour of the operational mill, live bluegrass and gospel music, antique cars and farm tractors, a petting zoo, molasses making, and quite a bit more.  Boy Scout troops camp on the site during the festival weekend and provide activities and events for people visiting the festival as well.  There are also quite a few civil war re-enactors at this event each year, and they are dressed in era garb, and some are even on horseback.  The people who put on and participate actively in this event are my favorite reason for attending every year.  The above photo, for example, is one of the reasons I love to go.  I love photographing people who are in their own world doing their own thing.  Henry Detter was spending his day grinding corn and narrating the process to all the visitors to the mill.  This is also a location where I occasionally get to add a couple new prints to my inventory.  I added these two today:

I have recently opened my online storefront for my photography.  If you are interested in purchasing prints of my art photography, please stop by for a visit.  You can get to the store by clicking on the PHOTO GALLERY link at the top of this page.  Support my habit… buy a print!

The 23rd Annual Murray’s Mill Harvest Folk Festival will be held this year on September 29th and 30th at the Historic Murray’s Mill site in Catawba, North Carolina.  This is a local event that I enjoy attending every year.  It’s always held on the last weekend of September and it’s a lot of fun.  The link I posted doesn’t really give you a good idea of what goes on at this festival… there is a lot more than good music to see and hear!  You can tour the mill, watch civil war re-enactments, check out some antique trucks and tractors, watch molasses being made, see lots of neat exhibits, and of course, eat too much.  I plan to go on Saturday as long as I don’t have work to do.  Any of you local people interested in going with me, just let me know.  I think the Catawba Valley Camera Club has this event listed as a club field trip…

I consider myself lucky to be a part of a truly global community of photographers via the internet.  I have made a lot of friends around this third stone from the sun over the last six years or so.  Manny is a 42-year old resident of Bankok, Thailand.  I first met Manny through the DPChallenge.com website, where he, like myself, was participating in occasional photography competitions.  Watching him grow into what he is today has been an incredible adventure.  Even though Manny still considers himself a hobbyist photographer, his work is gaining worldwide recognition, and he’s conducting workshops internationally.  Manny’s ability to capture the essence of human nature through the lens of his camera never ceases to amaze me.  He loves to travel, and he’s constantly grabbing some of the most phenomenal photojournalistic-style portraits and candids I have ever seen.  Manny cites Steve McCurry as one of his sources of inspiraiton, which is obvious in some of his work, but Manny has, in my opinion, stepped out and become a unique source of inspiration on his own.  Click on the image above to visit Manny’s online gallery and be amazed as much as I have been.

On July 30, I took a part time job that was going to take me away from shooting a lot of sports for the local newspaper.  Fortunately, my work schedule left me free on Friday nights, and I have been covering High School Football anyway.  My original intent with the part time job was that I’d be working on nights that would keep me from being able to do this.  After 5 weeks on this part time job, I have determined that I can’t continue to do it, and I’m going back to the sports beat with the local newspaper.  In an effort to keep photography as my supporting income while I’m in school for the next two years, I’m going to be expanding what I’m doing locally as well.  I’ll be providing more details on that effort within the next week or two as I put the pieces of this puzzle together.  I’m looking at some opportunities that should work out nicely and keep me out of some mundane slightly-above-minimum-wage trudgery in the wonderful world of retail.  I’m turning in my notice for the part time job on Tuesday.  I’ll finish out the week until Sunday, and then I’m finished with that :)

It’s been sorta funny lately… I have run into a lot of people at the football games who constantly tell me “I thought you were giving this up”…  All I can say is that….

Shit happens.

Give me a shout-out when you see me on the sidelines or hunkered down on the baseline…

Greetings to everyone :)

I haven’t posted much here lately because I have been busy with school and another sideline project.  I have decided to make my prints available online again after spending a lot of time researching the best way to make it happen.  After looking at several companies that provide this service, I have settled on one finally.

The company I decided to use is ExposureManager.com.  Selling prints online isn’t something I have spent a lot of time with in the past.  Most of my sales are local and through local venues.  However, in recent months, I have decided to start doing some extra sports freelancing, and I needed a service like this to make those images available online to my customers.  I’m also going to be expanding my freelancing service on the local sports scene over the next couple months.

Membership to ExposureManager.com is $100 per year, and then they take 10% off the top of each sale.  Financially, that was the best deal I found.  ExposureManager also offers unlimited storage with 20GB per month of bandwidth, which I think will be plenty for my application.  The competition took a higher percentage off the top and did not offer unlimited storage space.

I have started setting up my art print gallery on this new service, but it’s going to take a while before everything is completed.  You can take a look at the beginnings of my storefront here:
