PowerShot G9 Revisited
I was out and about this evening and decided to take the G9 with me again. I still haven’t had a lot of time to play with this camera due to my school and work schedule. I shot the above photo with the G9 in aperture priority mode at f/4, ISO 80, and 1/40″ hand-held. This image has just been resized with no additional editing of any kind. Below is a 100% crop from that same image…
The original image is 4000×3000 pixels and this crop is 500×333 pixels from that original, again with no editing. Once again, I’m very impressed with the results. I have been reading some online about other photographers’ experiences with this camera, and most seem to be very happy with it with a few minor exceptions. I’m seeing a lot of people who are in my exact same situation buying this camera… the avid DSLR owners who want a formidable SMALL camera to carry around with them when they don’t want to or don’t feel like carrying a big camera bag. The biggest complaint I’m seeing is the noise levels at high ISO when compared to the SLR. I’m sure all SLR users would love to have a pocket camera that performed as well in the high ISO ranges as the SLR, but it’s just not going to happen anytime soon. This G9 does seem to perform better than any other small camera I have owned at high ISO, but it does not perform as well as my EOS. Smaller sensors naturally produce more noise. I may try to do some high ISO comparisons between the 30D and the G9 when I get a chance. That’s also a really difficult comparison to make because of the lens differences, but we’ll see what happens…

The complaints about high iso noise seem misplaced to me. With slow AF, you aren’t likely to use this camera in low light situations anyway. Certainly looks good @ 80.
@matt: I’m not worried about grain. When I’m shooting in low light, I can accept it readily. I actually like it in a lot of cases… :)
