Half Way There

6/18/2008 - Digital Lecture

An interesting milestone passed on Friday… Friday marked the half way point in my Radiography program. I hit the 5-week mark in the 10-week summer semester (third semester out of five). Right now, I’m sitting in an empty classroom while everyone else has left for lunch or whatever they want to do. We had a final test in our RAD-122 (Imaging) class this morning and we have a final lab test for that same class at 1pm. My grades look good so far in this class, and I should get an A for the semester unless I totally botch my lab test after lunch. We will come back to class on Wednesday and dive into the RAD-131 class (Physics). I think I am going to enjoy the Physics. I’m good with math and I enjoyed Physics during my first trip through college. This round of Physics won’t be as complicated as general college physics, but it will be more in the realm of practical application.

I don’t have clinical tomorrow. It’s an advising day at the school, so there are no classes or clinical. Some of my classmates will be making up missed clinical time tomorrow, but I’ll be sleeping late and not doing much of anything :)

Here We Are…

Friday is our last day of the semester. I loaned my camera to our head cheeze to snap this photo of my class when we attended the pinning ceremony for the graduates last night. One of our students played hookie from the pinning ceremony so there are only eight of us in the photo. One of our students in this picture is also playing hookie from clinical tomorrow so he can go fishing.

A little bit about this group…

First row - Left: Duggan - experimental remote controlled airplane pilot…

First row - Center: Amanda - hair dresser extraordinairre…

First row - Right: Wendy - YouTube model (my positioning videos) and she sucks cause she’s going to Mexico over the break…

Middle row - Left: Jason - hookie-player who is feared by fish in 5 counties…

Middle row - Center: Amber - Newlywed (i think during the break)

Middle row - Right: Chelsea - Elvis freak and the youngest member of our troop…

Back row - Left: Joan - The one everyone wants to sit next to at test time…

Back row - Right: John - by far, the sexiest member of this class, the best photographer, the best blogger, and an inspiration to all…

Not pictured: PAUL… he shouldn’t have played hookie :)

I’ll be back in a couple weeks…

Looking Ahead

Hickory Crawdads - Miles Durham

My second semester of Radiography school is coming to a close, and I find myself thinking about what I want to do with this education when I graduate in May of 2009. In my first year of clinical rotations, I have worked in an outpatient imaging center, two hospitals, and one orthopedic office. Those three environments pretty much cover the complete spectrum of x-ray work.

I see certain advantages of working in each of these environments. What I need is some feedback from people who work in the field and other students who have spent more time thinking about what they want to do with their education in radiography. If you read this blog, please take a few minutes when you get a chance and let me know what your opinions are on the subject of the various working environments for radiographic technicians.

The Ultimate Steal

I just wanted to take a moment to let you know about a rather nice bargain I was introduced to this week.  If you are using the Microsoft Office software suite, or any part of it as a student, Microsoft is offering a promotion where you can purchase the Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 software suite for $59.95.  Here is the link to the site:

The Ultimate Steal

This is a legitimate offer from Microsoft, and I have taken advantage of it myself.  I have been using Microsoft Office 2000 since it was first introduced, so I think now is a good time to upgrade.  The end-user license agreement also allowed me to install the software on my home desktop computer as well as my laptop system.

Red House

chili_0877

I just spent the last few hours working up a large pot of some good red chili.  I sampled it and it’s not bad.  I love chili, but to be quite honest, chili doesn’t get REALLY good until it’s been frozen and reheated.  I’m not going to be able to freeze this batch for the chili cook-off because I have to take it to school with me tomorrow.  If I think about it, I’ll take my camera with me to school tomorrow and shoot some more photos…

Since we have no classes today, it was a good day to cook a little…

NRTW Chili Cook-Off

AH13-W-TheLesPaul

In honor of National Radiologic Technologist Week and some other Allied Healthcare week, we’re having a chili cook-off at school on Wednesday.  Somehow or another, I got myself roped into making a pot of chili for this event.  I haven’t made a good pot of Red in a long time, so I think I’ll knock that out tomorrow and then eat some good chili with my classmates on Wednesday.  We’re out of class tomorrow for ‘advising’ day, so it will be a good day to do a little cooking.

Phi Theta Kappa?

NW19-W-Melancholy

I got an invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa today.  I know what it is, but I’m having a hard time understanding the benefit of me joining this organization.  There is a lot of scholarship money that they offer their members, but it looks like a large majority of it is for two-year college students who are planning to transfer to a four-year school immediately after graduation.  Can someone tell me if there is any benefit for me beyond being able to put it on a resume?  That alone may be worth the membership…

T-Shirt Idea

2009 Rad Tech Logo - small

Some of my classmates were discussing the possibility of having some T-shirts made for the members of our class.  Our instructors told that if we showed them some good ideas, we could possibly get some made, so I’m submitting this idea.  My sister owns a tattoo shop, so I talked one of her tattoo artists into drawing this hand for me to use on this project.  This particular design would be for the back side of the t-shirt.  I’m thinking that the hand and maybe either “Class of 2009″ or “Radiologic Technology” as a smaller image on the front pocket or chest of the t-shirt…  What do you think?

Radiography Student Network

I just wanted to take a moment to mention the Radiography Student Network once again.  I created this website as a place for students of Radiography to get together and share information and experiences.  A few people have started to join this site, and I really believe it can become successful as more join.  This site is completely free, so stop by if you can!
